Pageism with Paige, The Pageist
A year in the making …
The anniversary of my first appearance on TPOK Radio is on May 1st. I have come a long way from being a reluctant guest on The 3rd Rail. Since then, I have appeared on The Rainbow Connection, The People of Kink Podcast, as well as a round-table discussion with hosts from three shows. Oh, and I started a TPOK Radio show in July 2016. To say that conversation about drugged, unconscious sex has changed my life would be an understatement.
I am very proud of the content that I present under the Stereo-Typed label and grateful for the guests that have given their time and expertise, but something is missing. As I continue to work on the show, it is becoming more and more focused on research. I don’t see that as a bad thing. Quite the contrary. Being someone who loves learning (yeah, reading sex-related research might just be one of my kinks), I am enjoying the conversations with people who are studying us in a sex-positive way. I genuinely believe that we need these wonderful souls so that we can make further inroads with the medical community and legislative bodies. So, I will continue to find these studies and invite the investigators, authors, and other thinkers to share their insight with us.
What was missing? Research is great! I love it. But what I feel is missing from Stereo-Typed is anecdotal experiences. And I want to know about all the different kinks and interests that come under our great big umbrella of BDSM and Alternative Sexuality. More so, I want to know how it feels. I may not necessarily want to try everything, but I want to learn about as much as I can. I want to:
- See things through the eyes of the beholder.
- Hear the emotion in the words of someone who loves doing that thing that they do.
- Know what it is that they get out of whatever it is that they consider kinky and sexy.
While I could do this under the Stereo-Typed name (and initially, I will be), I have decided that this will eventually be its separate podcast. I believe that this segment will have a wider audience because there are a lot of people who wonder why we do what we do. It will be a pre-recorded episode every other week. On occasion, I may do a live show or give a live introduction. I haven’t decided all of that yet.
What I do know is that the first couple (or so) will be part of Stereo-Typed.
The inaugural episode: Pageism
Who better to help me introduce this new format than the host of my sister show, The Pageist? If you haven’t checked out her podcast, and you like books, I strongly recommend her show. Each week she posts a review of something she has read that has something to do with kink or alternative sexuality. On occasion, she has interviews with authors and other people with experience in the kinky ways. You can find her show on Spreaker as part of the TPOK Radio family, and she has a website. If you like what you see and hear, she also has a patreon page where you can show her some love and support.
Paige is a pageist. Naturally, this means she can tell us something about pageism. And she did. I have already recorded our interview and will be sharing it with you on May 3rd. If you would like to join me for the live broadcast, I will be participating in the chat once I finish the introduction and news (which I will be doing live). I look forward to exploring this interesting topic with you.
So, what is pageism? Where did we get this term?
The short answer is that Pageism is a form of Power Exchange that comes to us from Richard von Kraft-Ebbing’s book about sexual perversion entitled Psychopathia Sexualis, first published in 1886 (we incorrectly said it was in the 1860s during the show). A page functions as a personal assistant, companion and confidante for the person they are in service to, becoming an integral component of their lives. A page is a highly service-oriented role. Sexual interaction is not an aspect of this relationship dynamic, though it could be. Paige explains it better than I can in this space. What struck me was the similarity between pageism (as described) and my ideal of a Master/slave relationship, except I (personally) want the sex … all the sex. Of course, sex isn’t necessarily inherent in M/s dynamics either.
During the conversation, Paige made a few recommendations of books and films that give a clearer understanding of the type of relationship a page would have with their dominant partner. We also talked about Victorian times (something we both find of interest).
Here’re some of the other things mentioned in the show:
- Paradigms of Power, edited by Raven Kaldera
- Gosford Park (film)
- Jeeves and Wooster (TV show)
- Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management (book)
- Ripper Street (TV show)
- Ladies Emporium/Historical Emporium (historical clothing website)
Another difference from Stereo-Typed
I won’t do any research. Seriously! As much as I love researching, I want to learn about these kinks from the people who enjoy them. Granted, some of the topics we’ll investigate on Fetish Philes will be kinks that I, myself, enjoy. Others will be topics that interest my friends. But I want to try to keep this as personal as possible. Occasionally, a particular fetish or interest will find its way on both shows, one from an academic perspective, the other with personal anecdotes. When (if) this happens, I will try to focus on the feelz for the Fetish Philes episode.
Of course, it also bears saying that every person experiences things differently. In our lifestyle, we usually have (at least) two sides to an experience. Fetish Philes will be exploring kink through the experiences of people who enjoy that activity or relationship dynamic. Their experiences will give us some insight into the philia but are limited to their perspective. Over the course of the show, we may revisit some of the topics from the other side of the coin, or when someone comes to me with a different experience.
Join me for the live airing
I will be doing a live portion (Notes on AltSexNYC, Station News, the upcoming Kinksters for Critters auction, and Introducing this new segment/show) at the beginning of the show then streaming the interview on May 3rd, 2017, starting at 7 pm ET. As noted above, I will also be participating in the chat.
