Stereo-Typed @AltSexNYC 2017
Achievement Unlocked: Attend a Conference
Thanks in part to my Sugar Daddy Collective, Stereo-Typed is heading out on its first road trip to The Big Apple. My bags are packed and I’m ready to go! I am stoked and filled with all sorts of anxious energy. This conference is a huge deal (for me and hopefully for the show). On a personal level, I’m going to brave New York City and spend a long weekend with my husband and mother exploring Manhattan. We have a full itinerary, which includes checking out the Museum of Sex and a series of bus tours of the island. This will be my husband’s first trip to New York City and I haven’t been since I was 8 years old. A lot has changed since then (in fact, we watched a gang fight that could have been a street performance of West Side Story minus the singing and dancing).
Why AltSex NYC?
Why not? First, I guess I should tell you what AltSex NYC Conference is. The easiest way to do this is to quote their website:
The phrase “alternative sexuality” is purposefully broad, and inclusive of non-conforming gender identifications and sexual orientations and an intersectionality of gender and sexual expressions.
The AltSex NYC Conference is a forum designed to disseminate information in a respectful, sex positive, and affirmative manner, including but not limited to kink and BDSM, polyamory and consensual non-monogamy, non-binary identifications, and non-traditional relationship and kinship structures.
The conference organizers and presenters are experts and professionals currently working clinically, teaching and conducting seminars, and/or conducting much needed research on the populations that have historically had access to minimal support and understanding of their lifestyles, behaviors, and relationship structures.
This is exactly the type of content that I want to feature on Stereo-Typed. In fact, some of the speakers have already been guests on the show. So, is it any wonder that I would want to explore the possibilities that this conference could open up?
Old friends and new ones?
Probably the most compelling reason to go to AltSex NYC as my first conference is because I will know people. Okay, I have never met them, but they have been guests on the show. Dr Michael Aaron told me about it when we discussed his appearance on Stereo-Typed. He joined me on Episode 8 to discuss fantasies, our Jungian Shadow and his book Modern Sexuality.
There is another familiar name on the list of speakers. You will recall Galen Fous joined me on Episode 16. We discussed sexual authenticity and claiming our sexuality as a birthright.
If meeting these friends of the show isn’t enough of an incentive, I will also have the opportunity to talk to other potential guests. Top of my list is Dr David Ley (who has been on The Pageist). Additionally, I want to meet Eric Pride (who is a well-known kink educator in NYC). DJ Williams is one of the authors of the 4 Cs of BDSM paper that I discussed with Emily Prior (Episode 13). He will be talking about vampirism. Additionally, Dulcinea Pitagora (also known as the Kink Doctor) was also one of the investigators on the study into Purposeful Pain featured on Episode 12 (with Markie Twist and Michael Aaron)
Get the idea? These are the people to whom I wish to speak. The thinkers who I believe you will enjoy hearing. And these are just the speakers. In addition, the audience will be filled with clinicians, researchers, and members of the BDSM community.
Additionally, I will get to learn. Okay, that won’t come as a surprise to any of you.
The schedule is full of interesting topics. Sex work, furries, vampirism, nonconventional relationships … the list goes on. Each of these is something that would make for an interesting episode. I could conceivably cover some of the topics on both shows.
I look forward to shaking hands and telling people about the wonderful programming on TPOK Radio.
Each of the speakers and many of the attendees are potential guests. With the two shows, I need to increase interest and awareness. I am a woman on a mission. I plan to talk to as many people as I can at the conference. To further my efforts, I have armed myself with a postcard that gives a brief description of both initiatives.
